Import Duty Waiver on Life-Saving Drugs

Image
The Union Budget 2025 introduced changes to import duties on life-saving drugs. The government has waived import duties on 36 essential medications and reduced it for an additional six. This initiative aims to make critical treatments more affordable for patients in India. Despite the reduction in costs, most imported drugs remain under patent protection, keeping them expensive. Changes in Import Duties The basic customs duty on life-saving medicines is set at 5%. The 2025 Budget now exempts 36 drugs used for cancer and rare diseases from any import duty. Additionally, the import duty for six other life-saving drugs has been reduced to 5% from 7.5%. Another 37 drugs under patient assistance programs are also exempted from the duty. This policy supports patients reliant on imported medications for severe medical conditions. Goods and Services Tax on Medicines All finished formulations of medicines attract a GST of 12%. However, specific medicines for critically ill patients are taxed ...

Nematode Management

Image
Plant parasitic nematodes are becoming threat to agriculture in India. Recent discussions among over 100 agricultural scientists at a symposium in Goa brought into light the annual crop losses due to these pests, estimated at ₹25,000 crore. Experts emphasized the need for effective nematode management to protect soil health and sustain crop productivity. What are Nematodes? Nematodes are microscopic worms belonging to the phylum Nematoda. They are among the most abundant animals on Earth. They can be free-living or parasitic, affecting plants, animals, and humans. Nematodes thrive in diverse environments, including soil, freshwater, and marine settings. Impact on Agriculture Plant parasitic nematodes attack plant roots, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields. Their presence often goes unnoticed until damage occurs. This hidden danger makes them particularly challenging for farmers. The symposium called for the urgent need for awareness and action against these pests. Manag...

High-Entropy Alloys for Hydrogen Production

Image
Recent advancements in clean energy technology have brought into light the potential of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for hydrogen production. These innovative materials can reduce the reliance on precious metals such as platinum. Researchers at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) in Bengaluru have developed a new HEA catalyst, PtPdCoNiMn, which demonstrates enhanced efficiency in the electrolysis of water. About High-Entropy Alloys High-entropy alloys are metallic substances containing multiple elements, typically five or more, in nearly equal proportions. Their unique composition leads to increased stability and versatility. Unlike traditional alloys, HEAs rely on entropy to stabilise their structure, which allows for improved performance in various applications, including catalysis. Catalyst Development Process The CeNS researchers created the PtPdCoNiMn HEA catalyst using two distinct methods – electrodeposition and solvothermal synthesis. The electrodeposition...

Withdrawal of Track and Trace System for Pharmaceuticals

Image
The Commerce Ministry has recently withdrawn the track and trace system for pharmaceutical exports. This decision aligns with the regulatory framework established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Health Ministry has introduced barcode requirements for drug brands starting from August 2023. This move aims to enhance the ease of doing business for exporters while ensuring compliance with international serialization norms without imposing additional domestic regulations. Background of the Track and Trace System The track and trace system was introduced on January 10, 2011. It mandated barcoding at various packaging levels. Implementation for tertiary and secondary packaging occurred in 2011 and 2013. However, primary-level barcoding faced operational challenges and was repeatedly deferred. The last extension was valid until February 1, 2025. Benefits of the Track and Trace System The track and trace system offers multiple benefits. It helps prevent counterfeit dru...

WHO Guidelines on K-Salts

Image
Recent health guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggest that switching from traditional table salt to potassium-based salts, known as K-salts, could aid in managing blood pressure and reducing heart disease risks. This recommendation is particularly relevant in countries like India, where hypertension is public health concern. About K-Salts K-salts are substitutes for regular table salt, which is primarily sodium chloride. These potassium-based salts replace sodium chloride with potassium chloride. This switch can help decrease sodium intake while increasing potassium consumption. Potassium is essential for heart health and can help lower blood pressure. WHO Guidelines on Sodium and Potassium Intake The WHO guidelines recommend reducing sodium intake to less than 2 grams per day, equivalent to about 5 grams of salt. They advocate for the partial replacement of table salt with potassium-based alternatives. However, these recommendations do not apply to specific...

Epicoccum Indicum Fungi Species Discovered

Image
Recently, researchers from Banaras Hindu University identified a new species of phytopathogenic fungi named *Epicoccum indicum*. This discovery is linked to an emerging leaf spot disease affecting *Chrysopogon zizanioides*, commonly known as vetiver or khus. This discovery marks the importance of understanding plant diseases and their impacts on agriculture and medicinal plants. Identification Process * Epicoccum indicum * was identified through a combination of morpho-cultural characteristics and multigene molecular phylogenetic analyses. The phylogenetic study showed that this species forms a distinct clade, differentiating it from related species. This classification was crucial for recognising it as a new species. Importance of Vetiver *Chrysopogon zizanioides* is valued for its medicinal properties. It is used in traditional medicine for treating pain, inflammation, and infections. The discovery of * Epicoccum indicum * poses a risk to this important plant, making early de...
