Mizoram Shift School Academic
Mizoram to shift school academic calendar to January-December cycle from 2027-28
What’s Changing: New Academic Calendar from 2027–28
Mizoram has announced that from the 2027–28 academic year, schools in the state will switch from the current April–March calendar to a January–December academic schedule. This change applies to primary and high school levels — students in classes 1 to 10 will follow the new calendar year format. However, classes 11 and 12 will continue with the April–March system for now, and the Class 10 board exams will still be held in the usual February–March period.
Why Mizoram is Shifting the School Year
The state government, led by Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana, says the decision is rooted in local realities such as the climate, hilly terrain, and lifestyle of families in Mizoram. Officials believe a January–December calendar suits the state better, especially considering the monsoon season and frequent landslide risks. Authorities are also exploring longer vacations during peak rainy months to keep students safe.
Community Feedback and Consultation Process
The change didn’t come overnight — the education department conducted extensive consultations with teachers, parents, and organisations across Mizoram. Feedback was overwhelming: about 92.2% of respondents supported the January–December cycle, while a small percentage preferred the existing system or a separate timetable for lower classes. This broad support helped shape the final decision.
Other School Reforms Alongside the Calendar Shift
In addition to reorganising the academic year, the government announced a few other education reforms. One key update is ending the requirement for common uniforms in government schools — now each school can decide its dress code. The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) is also introducing policies to de-emphasise rank and percentage in class 10 and 12 results, with a focus on competency-based learning instead of rote memorisation.
Background: A Return to an Older System
Mizoram had initially shifted to the April–March academic calendar more than five years ago to align with much of the rest of India’s education system. The new move essentially reverts to the January–December format that was traditionally followed earlier, making the change a return to a calendar year school cycle tailored to local needs.
