Academic Excellence No Longer Enough, Arab Universities Told

Arab universities are being urged to rethink their traditional approach to higher education, as experts say that academic excellence alone is no longer sufficient to compete in the modern global knowledge economy. At a regional higher-education summit, leaders highlighted the need for universities to focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration alongside strong academic performance.

For decades, universities in the Arab world measured success primarily through teaching quality, academic rankings, and research output. While these remain important, education experts argue that universities must now also prepare students to thrive in rapidly changing economies driven by technology and innovation.

Speakers at the summit emphasized that the region has strong talent and ambition but needs to convert academic knowledge into practical solutions and economic value. Universities should play a larger role in shaping a knowledge-based economy rather than simply producing graduates.
